Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis occurs when a broad band of tissue located on the bottom of the foot becomes painful and irritated.
What is Plantar Fasciitis?
- The plantar fascia is a broad band of tissue located on the bottom of the foot.
- Plantar fasciitis occurs when that tissue becomes painful and irritated.
What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?
- Overuse
- Tightness in the bottom of the foot or back of the heel
- Athletic shoes that are too old or not supportive enough
What are the Symptoms?
- Pain, anywhere from the bottom of the heel down into the arch.
- This pain is usually worse during the first few steps following a period of rest – for example, walking after you have been sitting or lying down for a while, or when getting out of bed in the morning.
What Can I Do to Feel Better?
- Rest from activities that cause pain
- Ice for 15-20 minutes as often as once per hour
- Stretch the bottom of the foot, toes, and Achilles’ tendon
- Wear shoes with good arch supports to take the tension off of that area
When Should I See a Medical Professional?
- Pain and swelling do not improve with rest and ice
- Pain that is getting worse
- If you’re unable to put weight on the foot
- If you’re unsure about how severe the condition is
